Why Teenage Girls Are Especially At-Risk of Developing Mental Health-Related Issues

For countless girls, puberty represents a significant change that can exacerbate the anxiety of their teenage years. For one, as a girl's body develops, she must adjust to the physical changes of womanhood and learn to navigate her own questions and worries around where she stands in the world as an individual. That said, it is an all-too-common mistake to chalk up a troubled teenage girl's problems to hormones and physical development.

When it comes to troubled teenage behaviors, many contributing factors that are more complicated, contradictory, and even media-saturated-related issues often come into play.

In other words, in addition to naturally volatile changes, teenage girls often face societal obstacles unique to their gender. In many cases, these compounded biological and cultural consequences make it difficult for teenage girls to navigate their everyday lives healthily or even prosocially at all.

Common Issues that plague teenage girls today:

  • They are attempting to discover their own unique identity.
  • They are taking on more and more aspects of adulthood while leaving parts of childhood behind.
  • They are developing independence while (hopefully) maintaining family bonds.
  • They are living up to unrealistic standards set by our culture.
  • They currently suffer from unprecedented rates of mental illness.
  • They are Facing an increased likelihood of developing dangerous habits and addictions than their male counterparts.

Whether from societal pressures, biological influences, or a mixture of the two, teenage girls are the most vulnerable and likely demographic to experience mental-health-related issues and illnesses. That said, it's more important than ever for Christian parents to seek Christ-centered counseling for their daughter if she is displaying out-of-control behaviors due to underlying issues.

What Is Christian Counseling and How Can it Help Troubled Teenage Girls?

As its designation implies, Christian counseling is a Jesus-centered treatment that combines the word of God and modern psychiatry to counsel those with mental health-related issues. Unlike traditional psychiatry and therapy, Christian counseling involves formal one-on-one therapy sessions and faith-based messages when treating an individual.

That said, Christian counselors, or therapists, are also similar to regular therapists in many ways. For instance, a certified Christian counselor diagnose and treat mental illnesses with the same accreditation as a secular mental health counselor. Truly, the only difference between the two mental health professions is that Christian counselors also tend to their patient's spiritual needs.

According to the International Association of Biblical Counselors  (AIABC), Christian therapists "seek to thoughtfully identify those areas in which a Christian may be defiant to the principles and commands of Scripture and to help him learn how to submit to Jesus' will. Christian therapists, therefore, do approach psychology, albeit through a biblical lens." The authority of AIABC also states that the only distinction between secular and Christian counseling is that Christian therapists, while knowledgeable in modern psychology, are driven by the Bible as their therapeutic impetus.

As it pertains to the treatment of troubled teenage girls, Christian counseling is verifiably proven to be effective in rehabilitating their mental and behavioral health -- even more so than secular psychology.

Why Many of Today's Parents Choose Christian Counseling over Secular Treatment

As we've already covered, Christian counseling is similar and dissimilar to secular therapy in its treatment structure and ideological foundation. Proponents of biblically-based therapy contend that Christ-based therapy is superior to secular treatment because worldly counseling bases many of its practices on the latest psychological developments and societal norms.

Proponents of biblical therapy argue that psychological trends are constantly changing, making it immensely difficult to treat the root cause of any mental health-related issue effectively. However, this is not the case for Christian counseling. Whereas secular counseling is based on the stereotypically labeling of an individual into a cookie-cutter standard, biblical therapy is based on unwavering faith in the word of God, whose message is invariably constant.

Advocates for Christ-centered psychology also point out that secular treatment fundamentally fails because, without God's direction, it cannot recognize and treat the motives behind a troubled teen's self-destructive behaviors.

What's more, Christian counseling has proven more effective than secular-based therapy. According to over 100 metastudies over the last few decades, teenage girls from Christian households are more likely to be effectively treated than those from atheist families who receive secular therapy.
